Anti-Aging Products; What Works & What Doesn’t:

Hello, Beauties!

I’m at that age, where anti-aging creams, serums, and regimens are going to highly benefit my skin. Even if you’re 21, starting an anti-aging regimen early, is VERY important. Not only does it keep your skin young, but it also PREVENTS aging. I can’t tell you how many times my husband has had to drag me out of beauty aisles and counters, or Sephora, Ulta, or Nordstrom, because I’m obsessed with reading ingredient labels. There are so many products out there that promote anti-aging and cry, “MIRACLE SO & SO…” But aside from the millions of dollars marketing teams for cosmetic and beauty brands, dump into advertising and promoting their new, “Miracle Cure All For Aging” creams and serums, there has to be key ingredients, and believe it or not, certain packaging for the serums and creams to actually be effective. I’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on beauty serums and creams; ESPECIALLY anti-aging products. And I’m just now learning, that most of those expensive serums and creams, actually don’t work AT ALL.

So, I’m on a mission to educate all of you beauty buffs out there, on what actually works and what doesn’t. I’d love for all of you beauties to save the time and the money from wasting it on products that are actually, well, BS. Here are some of the tips and tricks, and some of the best products and regimens that I’ve learned, to help keep my skin looking fresh and feeling young;

Botox & other fillers:

$$$$

I’m all about Botox. There are some myths going around out there, that give Botox a bad name. Like everything, moderation is key. You don’t want to be stuck with a frozen face, looking overdone. You also don’t want to end up looking “Botched”. So the number one thing that is the MOST IMPORTANT when looking into Botox and other fillers, is making sure you are going to a CERTIFIED Botox/Filler doctor or nurse, that are usually, always, in plastic surgeons’ offices. I mean this IS your face that we are working with, and you don’t want just anyone with a syringe and vile of fillers, working on your face.

The second most important thing is that when starting young, Botox can actually PREVENT AND STOP aging (at least for a moment). This is not a myth. When I first started getting Botox, I got a lot of feedback from people saying, “You’re too young, you don’t need it”, or “You look so young, why are you getting it so early?” The answer is simple; I DO NOT WANT MY SKIN AGING PREMATURELY, IF AT ALL! I mean seriously; who wants their skin to age? NO ONE. And if Botox helps prevent that, then OF COURSE I’m going to take advantage of it!

Now, no matter what, your skin is going to age and lose elasticity. That’s not something that we can 100% prevent (yet). But with today’s technology, and the array of anti-aging products and solutions, why not take advantage of it?

Another myth about Botox is that you will leave the office looking “frozen” for a week or so. Well I’m here to tell you that it is the complete opposite. Botox doesn’t start showing up for at least 3 days to a week. Mine started to actually take effect in about 3 days. Then, POOF, my “washboard” forehead was completely smooth and supple. Like NO JOKE. This truly is a miracle that us “mellennial’s” have the privilege of having access to. And let’s be honest; Botox and other fillers are the most aggressive form of kicking aging skin in the butt.

Another myth is that there are serums and creams that can replace Botox treatments. I’ll tell you right now, there is NOTHING more advanced than Botox. Yes, there are some kickass serums and creams out there, but NOTHING will prevent your skin from aging, or erase wrinkles better than Botox or fillers.

Serums & Skin Treatments with HYALURONIC ACID:

$$$

If you aren’t ready for Botox or fillers, or simply can’t afford it (Botox & fillers are EXPENSIVE but worth it) then there is option B. Hyaluronic Acid. If you are using a serum or “anti aging” product that doesn’t have Hyaluronic Acid, then (I’m going to just be straight up) you are wasting your time and your money. Seriously. Hyaluronic Acid or HA works by moisturizing the skin. It’s a natural chemical that our bodies produce to keep the elastin in our skin “moisturized” and frankly, “elastic band” like. Have you noticed that when your skin is dry, (not moisturized by lotion or any product) when scraped, your skin will get a scratch mark that is VERY apparent? But moisturized skin can be scratched and your skin bounces back, like an elastic band, and that same scrape is NOT very, if at all, visible. That’s how Hyaluronic Acid works. It produces collagen and gives skin that elastin that it so badly needs, by deeply moisturizing dry, aging, skin. It plumps the skin, if you will. It gives your skin that deep moisture that it needs to prevent aging and smooths out wrinkles, that regular serums and lotions don’t give you.

Aside from preventing, and SLOWLY, erases, prevents, or treats wrinkles. Hyaluronic Acid is also present in, Juvederm, a “Botox” like filler. So, if Hyaluronic Acid is SO IMPORTANT for anti aging, how do you know a product you are buying contains it? If Hyaluronic Acid is not advertised on the bottle, or not labeled as a key selling point for anti aging on the serum/cream/lotion/etc. then ALWAYS check the ingredient list. SODIUM HYALURONATE is the ingredient you ALWAYS need to look for. Surprisingly, MANY serums and products that claim they are “anti aging” or a “filler replacement” or “miracle cream”, DO NOT EVEN CONTAIN HYALURONIC ACID. I’m talking about serums that are $100 +. After discovering Hyaluronic Acid, I was extremely disappointed  in SO MANY beauty brands that are jumping on the anti aging train. Why are we paying so much money for something that isn’t even effective? I’ve literally, found   face creams at the dollar store, that contain Hyaluronic Acid, so don’t be fooled by any brand claiming they have the secret to anti aging if they don’t contain Hyaluronic Acid. I’ve also noticed a trend of drug store beauty brands that are packaged in blue packaging (an obvious marketing trick to represent water or hydration) and are called something along the lines of “hydration **insert miracle verb”. I’ve looked into these deceiving and expensive serums and creams, and GUESS WHAT? NO HYALURONIC ACID IS PRESENT IN THE INGREDIENT LIST. So the moral of the story is KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR, AND KNOW WHAT WORKS!

Lastly, if the product is NOT in an opaque, air tight, pump style bottle, then don’t buy it. Once oxygen or sunlight hits the contents of the product that is packaged in a twist off, jar like bottle with a lid that completely comes off and exposes the product, once “opened” the product is contaminated by bacteria on our hands, and the key ingredients no longer are as potent. In fact every time you use that product, the ingredients lose potency day after day. Bummer right? For example, that’s why I’m so disappointed in IT Cosmetics “Confidence In A Cream”. The ingredients are great, but that jar like packaging literally, RUINS the potency and contaminates the cream. I would really like to see IT Cosmetics come out with an opaque, pump style package.

So remember; HYALURONIC ACID=SODIUM HYALURONATE. And it’s KEY to keeping younger looking skin, and preventing aging, as well as slowly treating signs of aging.

*BONUS* Hyaluronic Acid also treats wounds, scrapes, cuts, and when taken orally, can help joint pain.

Vitamin C:

$$

Vitamin C is as important to your skin, as it is to your health. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant for both skin and body, AND it’s the only antioxidant that researchers have proven that actually prevents and treats signs of aging.

Here’s a little story; my aunt is in her mid sixties. Aside from living a healthy lifestyle (no alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes) she looks like she’s in her mid 40’s. I’m not even exaggerating. Her skin is IMMACULATE. Especially for her age (crossing my fingers I got the good skin gene too!). One day we met for lunch, and she spilled her beauty secrets that she absolutely swears by. Aside from a moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid, the ONLY thing she uses aside from that is a PURE Vitamin C Serum. She absolutely swears by it.

Now, I know for myself, that living an alcohol free life cleared up my skin immensely. It was glowing. BUT I also know that living an alcohol free life isn’t possible for many of us! Even just social drinking can wreck havoc on your skin. Alcohol severely damages and dehydrates your skin; with that being said, replenishing the nutrients in your skin with Hyaluronic Acid AND Vitamin C, is CRUCIAL.

Vitamin C Serums and creams are a hot trend in the beauty world. Not only because of the antioxidants but because it works! It’s a key ingredient to keep younger looking skin, and a great preventative treatment. Also, when combined with Hyaluronic Acid, AND the twice a year Botox or filler upkeep regimen, your skin will literally, GLOW. Make sure you are taking your daily dose of Vitamin C, along with Biotin, and Vitamin D. You can get the best of all three, in a Hair, Skin, and Nails Daily Supplement. BUT applying Vitamin C ON your face and neck will not only produce faster results, BUT when taken internally and externally, you will see results twice as fast. My aunt gets her Vitamin C Serum from Amazon.com, and I definitely can attest to that. It’s the most cost effective way to go, and you can find the highest percentages of Vitamin C in a serum, on Amazon.

The specific product she uses is “Claireity Vitamin C Serum”; it’s 25% Vitamin C (most serums only have 20% or less), Vitamin E, and Hyaluronic Acid. ($14.95 Amazon.com). It’s for your face AND eyes. So it takes care of both, which is GREAT!

There are a lot of Vitamin C centered products on the market and in drug stores, as well as in Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, etc. I’ve found that most of these brands and products don’t have as high of a percentage of Vitamin C, than the serums sold on Amazon.  If you type in, “Vitamin C Serum” or “Claireity Vitamin C Serum) into the search bar on Amazon, an array of Vitamin C Serums will pop up. The things you need to look for are as follow; 20% + Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin E. Vitamin E is great for skin, and it has a soothing effect as an oil or serum, so it’s good for sensitive skin, and I’ve already expressed the importance of Hyaluronic Acid.

When looking on Amazon, I ALWAYS check the reviews. With so many serums out there, it’s hard to choose which one is most effective. Amazon also is online, so you don’t get that personal sales experience like you would in Sephora, Nordstrom, or Ulta. With that being said, READ THE REVIEWS AND INGREDIENTS LIST.

The key ingredient that you need to look for on the bottle is, L-ascorbic acid. It’s the effective source of pure Vitamin C, that can be used in skin care and beauty products. All other forms of Vitamin C are derivatives of the antioxidant, and are not as effective, BUT still are beneficial; AKA magnesium ascorbic phosphate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl glucosamine, ascorbic tetraisopalmitate, and sodium ascorbic phosphate. Sodium ascorbic phosphate has also been linked to effectively treating acne breakouts.

**IMPORTANT; look for packaging that is either opaque or thick glass or plastic, with a pump style applicator, to prevent contamination from air and light exposure. Once air or light hits the product or serum, the Vitamin C potency drops dramatically. Here is a list of my favorite serums and products that contain Vitamin C;

Namskara Vitamin C Beauty Serum 2 oz. (20% Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Ferulic Acid, Organic Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, & Citrus Stem Cells): ($13.95 Amazon.com)

Absolute Earth Ultimate C Pro 1 oz (Vitamin C listed as 2nd ingredient (it’s potent!), Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Ferulic Acid, AND it’s packaged in an AIR TIGHT, OPAQUE, PUMP DISPENSER, so no worries about contamination or potency!): ($15.95 Amazon.com)

MAC Cosmetics Lightful C Line; ($35-$55 maccosmetics.com)

MAC-Lightful-C-Spring-2015-Collection-1

(www.maccosmetics.com)

These are the top three MOST IMPORTANT AND EFFECTIVE product and ingredients in the beauty world, that have been researched and proven effective for anti-aging, and softening and preventing wrinkles. Not only do I swear by these methods, but science and dermatologists agree.

With that being said, there are lifestyle changes and habits that need to be eliminated and added to effectively live a healthy lifestyle. Healthy life=healthy skin. In fact, as most of you know, our skin is actually our largest organ. So if you’re dehydrated, putting toxins in to your body, or damaging your skin by not using sunscreen, or going tanning all the time, then your skin is going to age faster. Period. So make sure you are drinking 8 glasses of water per day, using a BROAD SPECTRUM sunscreen on your face daily, eating clean, staying away from alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes, and most of all, STAYING AWAY FROM TANNING BEDS. It’s crucial.

AND REMEMBER; pump style, air tight, opaque, packaging is EVERYTHING when it comes to anti-aging products.

Have A Fresh & Fab Day, Beauties!
