*On The Fresh Side* Highlighting + Strobing Edition: The Best/Latest Beauty Products To Step Up Your Glow Game

Hello, Beauties!

It’s no secret that having glowing, highlighted, shimmering skin, is the new black. And even though I’ve talked about this before, in past blogs, I always like to keep you updated on new products, that not only will make your makeup routine a little easier, but also make you your most gorgeous self. But before I let you know about my new favorite products, I’ll go through the history of “glowing” like a pro.

A. Contouring

A few years ago when Anastasia Beverly Hills banked on the craze called, “contouring”, popularized for the masses, by Kim Kardashian, herself, millions of Beauties, around the globe, started contouring, highlighting, and sculpting their faces for everyday wear. A simple matte highlight swiped on one’s nose, forehead, chin, and above their cheekbones, paired with a matte bronze contour, was added to the “classic” category of everyday makeup application. Now, contouring was something that a makeup artist only did for models on the runway, celebrities attending red carpet events (picture like, a million camera flashes on your face), editorial photoshoots, movies, television, or anything that involves a lot of pictures, filming, or attention to detail on someone’s face. It’s said that the camera puts on “10 extra pounds”, which is true; BUT contouring was/is a way to shape someone’s face or body, to look sculpted, thinner, and bring out the good things, along with masking the bad. But now that selfies are a daily ritual for pretty much every makeup/beauty/fitness/fashion/etc. enthusiast, contouring is now part of most people’s DAILY makeup routine.

B. Strobing

In comes, “strobing”; an easier, less time consuming way to contour someone’s face. In case you aren’t aware; strobing is when a highlighter, matte, satin, or shimmer based, is applied to your forehead, nose, chin, and above your cheek bones, to highlight the places that should be highlighted, but not having to bother with contouring, because the places that aren’t highlighted, will pop, which gives off a natural contour. With that being said, again, Anastasia Beverly Hills released their GORGEOUS, turned classic, “Glow Kits”. And highlighting was taken to another level, which is looking like your skin is literally, glowing. Anastasia’s “Glow Kits”, have a soft shimmering finish, that sparkles in or out of the light. Your skin looks like it has a healthy glow, and there are “Glow Kits” for every type of skin tone, shade, and warm/cool/neutral color cast. Also, a soft shimmering powder veil, skin perfecter, or glow powder, provides a more polished, perfected, and finished look, which helps hide skin imperfections, so it’s no surprise that this trend turned into a classic.

C. Glow/Shine/Shimmer

Today, every beauty brand has at least one shimmering highlighter palette, compacts, or kits, along with multiple shades to choose from, because the highlighting/strobing trend, took on a life of it’s own. Now models, celebs, beauty bloggers, makeup artists, social media stars, etc. all have shimmering, glowing, sparkling skin, that reflects a huge amount of light in every selfie/pic. And, every high end beauty brand, online makeup company, drugstore brand, or more affordable makeup companies, are coming out with new highlighting/strobing based products, EVERYDAY. Beauty brand’s like MAC, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Sephora Pro, Urban Decay, Marc Jacobs Beauty, Fenty, Laura Geller, Colourpop, Milk Makeup, Becca, Bare Minerals, Jeffree Star, Kylie Cosmetics, KKW Beauty, Too Faced,  Smashbox, Dose Of Colors, Makeup Forever, ELF, Maybelline, etc. etc. etc. are ALL focusing on highlighting, glowing, and strobing. So, with that being said, I’m going to talk about all of my new (and some older) favorite strobing, highlighting, and glowing beauty products, that will leave you feeling like a Unicorn or Mermaid.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Goldlite/Pinklite:

$26  www.maccosmetics.com

MAC focused an entire makeup line dedicated to highlighting; The “Hyper Real”, and “Strobe” Collection, have both been released over the past two months. For “Strobe”, they did a spin on their classic “Fix +” which now has microscopic gold/rose shimmering specs of glitter lights in the formula, to set, prep, or refresh makeup, by adding a soft shimmering glow to it. I always get nervous when beauty brand’s change a formula on a classic beauty staple, because a lot of the time, the formula doesn’t end up improving. BUT “Fix + Goldlite” and “Fix + Pinklite” are two products where I love the additions to the formula(s).

The original “Fix +” (which is the OG in Makeup Mists and Setting Sprays) is used to prep skin for makeup application, set makeup, refresh your makeup, or you can use it to literally, “Fix” makeup, without having to redo your entire face (think foundation touch ups/ re-application, etc.). So with the “Strobing” trend, having a makeup setting spray WITH ADDED SHIMMER, only makes for even more of a glow on your freshly caked face.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder:

$42  www.sephora.com

If you aren’t into looking TOO shimmery or over the top, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder is the way to go! The formula does have shimmer, but the shimmer is so finely ground, that you won’t look “frosty” or overdone.  It’s a powder formula, and applying it with a highlighting brush, large/medium/small powder brush, fan brush, Kabuki brush, or a a blush brush, will give you a healthy glow and radiance. It can be layered for more of a glow or highlight, but it’s extremely pigmented, so you don’t have to use very much product, and it never looks overdone. It comes in shades that are appropriate for everyone, and you can even get it in a “Nude Bronze” shade for contouring or bronzing. It’s extremely good at perfecting skin, and hiding skin imperfections. It also doesn’t wear off during the day, like some glow kits or highlighters/strobing formulas can.

It IS a little on the pricey side, but this is one of those products that you get what you pay for. There really isn’t anything I’ve found that’s comparable to Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, (unfortunately), but since it doesn’t take a lot of product to strobe/highlight, and the pigment percentage is high, as well as NOT wearing off during the day/night, it’s a great beauty investment. And believe me, compliments will be flowing like champagne, and selfies will be ON POINT.

Sephora Collection Golden Hour Luminizing Powder:

$16  www.sephora.com

Sephora is in the top three “most pigmented” makeup brands, along with Kat Von D Beauty, and Marc Jacobs. Before I worked for Sephora, and went through Sephora University, I always bypassed the Sephora Collection, thinking that it was just “so-so” makeup. But the more I try products from the Sephora Collection, the more I fall in love with them. And Sephora Golden Hour, is my absolute FAVORITE product from Sephora Collection. So that says A LOT.

This highly pigmented highlighter, or “Luminizing” powder, is a pressed highlighter, but the texture is almost buttery. It reminds me of the texture of Colourpop’s “Super Shock Shadows”. It can be applied with any kind of makeup brush, including a Beauty Blender, and it leaves some serious glow. It’s a little sparkly, but it won’t make you look frosty, or overdone. It leaves you with a subtle glow, or you can layer it on for a more obvious highlight or strobe.

Shades (As described by Sephora):

COLOR: 01 Dusk – “Pink tone that gives the effect of sultry, evening light.”

COLOR: 02 Dawn – “Peach tone that gives the effect of glowing, morning light.”

COLOR: 03 Twilight – “Lilac tone that gives the effect of ethereal moon light.”

COLOR: 04 High Noon – “Rose Gold tone that gives the effect of warm, radiant light.”

Soap & Glory Multi-Color Blush/Bronze/Shimmer Bricks:

$15  www.soapandglory.com

Soap & Glory reigns as THE QUEEN, of adorable packaging, with models posing in black and white “50’s Style Pin Up” photos, and clever names for products such as “Sexy Mother Pucker” Lip Gloss & Lipstick, this brand knows how to catch an eye or two. In the past this beauty brand has been known for their lux Body Butters, Lotions, Shower Gels, Peptide Creams, etc. but they have recently stepped up in to the makeup game. And so far, they are doing a great job providing an array of uniquely packaged products that are in between affordable and high end price scales, and high quality makeup.

Some of Soap & Glory’s best products to date, are their multi-color “Shimmer/Bronze/Blush Bricks”, that provide multi-color pigment “bricks” that gives you five dimensional color, on your cheeks, highlighting areas, or contour areas. The shimmer is very fine in each formula, so when you apply it, it gives you a subtle glow, but doesn’t make you look over done or frosty. In each compact, there are five different hues that differ from each other, but look great mixed together, or on their own.

Soap & Glory offers three different colors;

“Wonderbronze”, which is great for highlighting darker skin tones, without leaving grey tones, which many highlighters on the market, can do to darker skin. Or if you have light to medium skin, it’s great as a bronzer for Spring/Summer, or you can use it to add a pop of shimmer to your contour. It’s also a great bronzer or blush “topper”, which finishes bronzers or blush to give it more definition and dimension.

“Peach Party”, is a great blush for light skin tones, a great highlighter for medium to dark skin tones, and can be used to brighten skin, for all skin tones. Peach hues are great for brightening skin; especially medium to dark skin tones, and this flattering array of colors are right on trend with Spring/Summer ’18 looks; Especially for a  blush or highlighting hue. Like “Wonderbronze”, it can be used as a blush topper to give your blush more dimension, or it will freshen and brighten your look overall, as a highlighter.

“Love At First Blush”, provides a beautiful, subtle, blush shade, which is great as a blush for any skin tone, BUT is an AWESOME highlighter for darker skin shades, which is a rare find in the makeup industry; especially for drug store brands. It can be layered on for more intense color, but can be lightly swept on highlighting areas, or cheeks, for a more subtle look. Either way, it’s a beautiful color, and is flattering on every skin tone.

Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter:

$10  www.maybelline.com

Not all great products need to be expensive. And this product is one that works just as well, if not better, than most high end highlighters. Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter is absolutely GORGEOUS. And the name says it all; It has a “chrome-like/metallic” finish, that makes you look like you’re coming off a “Sports Illustrated” Bikini Shoot, on the beach in Fiji.

This is one of the more glittery/sparkly highlighters, and Beauties that love an obvious highlight, and some obvious sparkle, that’s highly pigmented, will LOVE Master Chrome. My personal favorite shade of Master Chrome, is “Molten Gold”. I love the deep bronze colored gold, and the finish it leaves. Beauties with darker skin shades, need to be careful with golden highlighters, because they can leave and ashy, grey color cast. BUT, it also comes in “Molten Rose Gold”, which is a deep bronze-y rose gold, that looks gorgeous on any skin tone, and doesn’t look ashy or grey on darker skin.

If you are more of a “Holographic” highlighting fan, (blues, purples, pinks, etc.), Maybelline has a “Master Fairy Highlight” Highlighter, in “Rainbow”, and the Ulta exclusive “Purple”. Either way you decide to go, Maybelline “Master Chrome” and “Master Fairy” Highlighters won’t disappoint. They are so popular, that it’s sometimes hard to find them stocked because they go so fast, BUT you can buy them direct from Maybelline, which always has them for sale.

AND I will be adding products (as I try them) to this list, and I will keep it updated through future posts! So keep your eye out for new reviews on more products that will make you shine, shimmer, and sparkle!
